As fast fashion comes under the spotlight, Sam Norton pays a visit to a London boutique dedicated to bringing designer items to the pre-loved market...
There is much more of an emphasis these days on sustainable fashion in response to the alarming figures that show just how much “fast fashion” is costing the planet. However, Re-Find (formally ‘Find’) in Battersea has been focusing on conscientious fashion for the past 20 years, tempting locals and visitors alike with second hand designer clothes at a fraction of the price. In our first of our series into promoting this ethos and way of updating our wardrobes, we visited Re-Find (not that we needed this excuse to shop) to have a look through all their lovely stock.
Every time you visit there’s something different to see. This fabulous little boutique shop is run and owned by Maxine. She has regulars who donate their unwanted designer pieces to be sold and in turn they get a percentage of that sale. On my last visit, there were gorgeous dresses from Alice Temperly, a stunning Alexander McQueen floor length gown, Prada shoes, Jimmy Choo kitten heels, a Kate Spade butter soft leather bag, a DVF animal print wrap dress, a Chanel Blazer, and rails packed with so many more delights. Not only can you find designer labels, there are some upper-end high street brands such as All Saints and Zadig & Voltaire nestled amongst the collectables. If that’s not enough excitement for one paragraph then the news that there’s currently a sale on with everything 50% off the marked price should get you planning your visit!
It is well worth making the trip as there’s plenty to do nearby. You could start off your day with a stroll in pretty Battersea Park picking up a coffee and a pastry from Pear Tree Café by the lake. After your browse and shop, there are a couple of pubs close by for a cold glass of something and a spot of lunch. You have the Lighthouse across the road with a lovely garden, plus about 100 meters from that is the Latchmere which does a cracking roast on a Sunday, along with the best chorizo scotch eggs and Bloody Marys.
Don’t make your trip to Re-Find a one off, the best way to create your perfect wardrobe is to always be on the hunt for bargains and original pieces. I have made several visits and always find something I love. Only recently I bought a black Superdry leather biker jacket for £21, plus a baby soft grey cashmere jumper, both of which have become favourites of mine. Did I mention there’s jewellery too, and sunglasses? Whatever your tastes, you will find something to treasure.
With our love of style and finding those perfect one-off pieces, paired with our support of sustainable initiatives and a bit of planet saving, Pretty Peachy will be trawling second hand designer shops and boutiques to bring you more inspiration and ideas for where to shop. Watch this space.
